Hon. Leslie Ellison’s leadership and voice have leveraged successful outcomes for children and schools of District 4 and throughout the OPSB and local charter schools’ networks, most notably: 

  • Pay raises approved for teachers, para-educators, security officers & child nutrition personnel 


  • Supported $9M System Wide Needs program to fund teacher training and mentoring, while providing increased mental health and behavioral support for students


  • Supported Act 430 to direct more of existing revenue to students and academic programming, the System Wide Needs Fund, and facility preservation


  • Provided internet hotspots and computers for children throughout New Orleans for distance learning


  • Edna Karr Charter, Alice Harte and Paul B. Habans Charter Schools moved into new state-of-the-art facilities 


  • School renovations completed at Harriet Tubman


  • School renovations started at Rosenwald, Collegiate,  and Martin Behrman Elementary School


  • Championed DBE participation in OPSB contracts and procurement


  • Provided scholarships to District 4 high school graduates attending Louisiana public colleges or universities 


  • Instituted later bus pick-up times

Putting My Experience
to Work

The Honorable Leslie Ellison serves the citizens of Algiers, Faubourg Marigny, Bywater and the French Quarter on the Orleans Parish School Board, District 4. Ms. Ellison was first elected to the Orleans Parish School Board on November 6, 2012. She was re-elected to a second term in office with overwhelming approval and support from District 4 citizens on November 8, 2016.


A strong visionary and passionate education leader, Ms. Ellison’s commitment to service rests in putting the needs of children and the community first. She has displayed astute prowess in these capacities for nearly 30 years through legislative and policy advocacy on education reform as well as intergovernmental affairs at the local, state, national and international levels.

Since assuming office, Ms. Ellison has served as OPSB Vice President as well as Chair of the Budget & Finance, Accountability, and Legal & Legislative committees. 

In addition to her service on the Orleans Parish School Board, Ms. Ellison is Owner and CEO of the Ellison Group, LLC, Administrator at Gideon Christian Fellowship International, and a Realtor licensed by the Louisiana Real Estate Commission. She is also an elected member on the Orleans Parish Democratic Executive Committee. 

Ms. Ellison is president of the Tunisburg Square/McClendonville Homeowners Neighborhood Civic Association, Vice President of the Algiers Presidents Council, and a member of Kiwanis of Algiers Morning Edition, Louisiana School Boards Association, and other organizations. 

In prior service in the public sector, Ms. Ellison served as Deputy Director of Intergovernmental Affairs for the City of New Orleans and worked as an administrator for the City of New Orleans’ City Attorney’s Office. 

Ms. Ellison obtained a degree in business administration from Southern University at New Orleans. A graduate of Orleans public schools, she attended Paul B. Habans Elementary as well as Edna Karr and Oliver Perry Walker Senior High School, respectively. Ms. Ellison is a lifelong resident of the historic Tunisburg/McClendonville community in Algiers, Louisiana.
